Rope (1948)
My first Hitchcock movie!
And it was definitely interesting. It isn’t the conventional suspense or thriller movie (not that I’ve watched a ton of those kinds of films) but I found myself covering my eyes when the housekeeper almost opened the trunk.
The movie was recommended by my uncle because of the unusual method of filming. The continuous shots and the not-so-obvious cutting of the scenes were pretty clever. It had a stage/theatre feel to it and I was right, the movie was based on a play which was supposedly based on a real life event, Leopold and Loeb.
At first I didn’t know why they’d want to kill him. They seemed like respectable gentlemen. Later in the movie we find out that it was sort of an experiment, eliminate those who are beneath you, according to a professor of theirs played by James Stewart (sort of hot). How philosophical. However, I also thought that David (dead guy) witnessed something that Brandon and Philip did. OOOOH. Ok, I read Wikipedia and I was absolutely poring over the themes of the film.
Very clever film. I liked it.
