Casablanca (1942)

“Kiss me as if it were the last time.”

Watching Casablanca for the first time was wonderful. The DVD was given to my parents as a wedding anniversary present and it has been lying around the house for at least three years now. My sister and I decided to finally watch it so we can find out what the fuss is all about.

I think one of the reasons why this film is popular is the clever mix of a romantic love affair in Paris during World War II. The music too and the dialogue! And of course, the actors. Humphrey Bogart was also a WONDERFUL element to the film. His poker face and monotonous voice. The way his vulnerability shows whenever he sees Ilsa. Oh wow. The only other movie of his I’ve so far is Sabrina and he looked so haggard. It was a nice change to see him younger and in a “love team” that works. Ingrid Bergman. Lovely. I never knew that their characters didn’t end up together (“We’ll always have Paris.” :( Shucks.) and that in real life, Bogart and Bergman weren’t really friends.

Paul Henreid not so much :( He was much classier and cuter in Now Voyager.
