Central Station (1998)

I stay away from dramatic movies because they usually make me cry. And I hate crying during movies :( Well, if I’m watching the movie all by myself, it’s alright with me. I was able to watch this terrific film during class and for my classmates to witness me bawling is not my cup of tea.

Central Station is funny/sad/insightful/inspiring/touching in all the right places. It is never melodramatic and it is never boring. I read in the imdb comments that they found the pace a bit slow. I disagree. If you combine the visuals with the fantastic score, the pace is just right. Most movies could go horribly wrong if they show landscapes without an engaging score during the scene.

If the soundtrack is available here locally, I would buy it. But it’s not. :(

Fernanda Montenegro is a great actress. Her portrayal of Dora is so real. As much as I was entertained (sort of) by Shakespeare in Love, Gwyneth Paltorw did not deserve the Oscar for her role. Montenegro had a raw performance that cannot be matched by Paltrow. I read she was recently in Love in the Time of Cholera. Might be interesting to see what she’s up to right now. And Josue (Vinícius de Oliveira) was so cute and funny. I wonder if he grew up to be hot? Haha.
